What Supplements do Vegans need?
B12: Vitamin B12 plays an essential role in the production of your red blood cells and DNA, as well as the proper functioning of your nervous system. The main sources of Vitamin B12 are animal-based, i.e. meat, dairy and fish. Although many vegan alternatives are fortified with Vitamin B12, it is important to make sure to get enough of this essential nutrient.
Vitamin D3: Vitamin D enhances the absorption of calcium and is responsible for many functions in the body, including immunity and muscle recovery. There are few foods that naturally contain Vitamin D, which is why we mostly depend on it from fortified foods and sunshine. As a vegan, it's important to note that the supplement contains Vitamin D3, as other forms are not considered vegan.
Iron: Iron is an important nutrient that the body needs to make ned DNA, red blood cells, and for your energy metabolism. It can be found in two forms - heme and non-heme. Heme iron is only found in animal products, which is why vegans and vegetarians are advised to aim for a higher iron intake than meat-eaters.
Omega 3: Omega 3 fatty acids are needed for brain and eye health and many other functions in our body. On a plant-based, unless your food is being fortified, you will not have access to DHA and EPA and it is, therefore, important to supplement.
