Does Turmeric Help with Inflammation?

What is Turmeric?

Turmeric, scientifically known as Curcuma Longa, is a spice that is a close relative of ginger. It is bright yellow in colour and can be found in most home pantries but is especially used a lot in Asia as a major constituent of curry powders. The root of the turmeric plant is dried and used in cooking, cosmetics, and dyes.

Turmeric gets its yellow colour from a pigment known as curcumin. This active component is responsible for turmeric’s colour and its wide range of health benefits, including its anti-inflammatory action.

The anti-inflammatory effect of Turmeric

For centuries, Ayurvedic medicine has used turmeric as a remedy for excessive pain and diseases. This use has now been bolstered by findings by researchers that curcumin has a strong anti-inflammatory effect by blocking the action of molecules in the body responsible for mediating inflammation.

But isn’t inflammation a good thing? Well, the answer is yes, and no. Inflammation is your body’s way of removing pathogens and repairing damaged tissue. It is the reason you can fight off an infection and heal after you get a cut.

However, sometimes inflammation in the body can get out of control, causing more damage than the actual problem. It can cause pain, swelling, and damage to your internal body parts. This phenomenon is called chronic inflammation and is seen in diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, heart disease, inflammatory bowel disease, tendonitis, and many others. In such cases, it is necessary to decrease the inflammation to reduce pain, long-term damage, and complications, which is what turmeric does well.

Other Benefits of Turmeric

  • Pain Relief

By reducing inflammatory processes, curcumin is able to decrease the release of pain mediators. This mechanism leads to reduced sensations of pain. In fact, a study had results indicating that taking turmeric extract three times a day had a similar outcome on the body as taking 1200 mg of ibuprofen.

  • Antioxidant

While destroying pathogens and foreign bodies, your body utilises free radicals. They are oxygen molecules that have the ability to cause damage to anything they come in contact with and are released during inflammation. If in excess, they can body the cells of your body. Antioxidants such as curcumin can neutralize these free radicals, protecting your body cells from damage. This antioxidant property gives it the ability to help reduce the risk of cataracts, heart disease, and glaucoma.

  • Brain food

Curcumin has the ability to pass the blood-brain barrier and enter your brain. Once there, it reduces the risk of protein plaque buildup, characteristically seen in old-age diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

It can also help balance the chemicals found in your brain, thereby preventing depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders.

Who Can Benefit From Turmeric?

Everyone can. You do not need to have a disease or health issue to benefit from turmeric. Some people, such as those with cardiovascular problems, mood disorders, arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and chronic pain, can have a much more noticeable benefit by using turmeric supplements.

Unlike traditional medicine, turmeric has zero side effects which makes it safe for consumption by anyone. However, if you are affected by a health condition such as kidney stones, or gallbladder disease, it is always a good practice to talk to your doctor before adding it to your diet.
